How to Become Catholic

Thinking about becoming Catholic?

You’re not alone. And you’re most welcome here.

Whether you're exploring the Catholic faith for the first time, or you're someone from another Christian tradition, we at St. Andrew Church, Bandra, are here to walk this journey with you.

Where Do I Begin?

In the Archdiocese of Bombay, adults who wish to become Catholic go through a process called the RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It’s a spiritual journey of learning, reflection, and growing in faith, typically spanning several months.

This process helps you understand who Jesus is, what the Church teaches, and how to live as part of a Christian community.

What is the RCIA Programme?

RCIA is not a class—it’s a process of conversion and faith formation. It is for:

  • Non-Christians seeking to know Christ and be baptised.

  • Baptised Christians from other denominations wanting to enter full communion with the Catholic Church.

  • Baptised Catholics who were never confirmed or never received the Eucharist.

The RCIA is usually led by trained catechists from your parish and supported by sponsors—fellow parishioners who journey with you.

What’s the Process Like?

Here’s how the journey unfolds in the Archdiocese of Bombay:

1. Inquiry / Pre-Catechumenate

  • A time to ask questions, meet others exploring the faith, and get to know Jesus and His Church.

  • You are not committing yet—just discovering.

2. Catechumenate (Learning Phase)

  • Weekly sessions begin—usually in June or July—where you learn about Scripture, Catholic beliefs, prayer, and the sacraments.

  • You’ll gradually begin to experience parish life and deepen your prayer.

3. Rite of Election

  • Held on the First Sunday of Lent at the Cathedral of the Holy Name, Fort, with the Archbishop.

  • This is a formal step where you express your desire to be baptised and are presented to the Archdiocese.

4. Period of Purification and Enlightenment

  • The 40 days of Lent—an intense spiritual preparation for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

  • Special rites like the Scrutinies help you reflect and grow in faith.

5. Sacraments of Initiation

  • Celebrated at the Easter Vigil, usually in your parish.

  • You are baptised, confirmed, and receive the Eucharist—fully entering the Catholic Church.

6. Mystagogy (After Easter)

  • A time to reflect on your new life as a Catholic and stay connected through fellowship and parish involvement.

Where is RCIA conducted?

RCIA is offered in most parishes of the Archdiocese of Bombay. At the Church of St. Andrew, Bandra, our sessions begin around June each year.

Whether you’re ready or just curious, we invite you to come talk to us. There’s no pressure—just a space to explore and be heard.

Important Note on Civil Law
